Bengaluru-based aerospace startup Akashalabdhi plans to launch a prototype of its expandable space habitat aboard a SpaceX rocket in the first quarter of 2026, according to a report by The Economic Times. The prototype will be deployed into low-Earth orbit to test its design and functionality.
The space habitat, called Antariksh HAB, is a pressurized inflatable module designed to expand once in orbit. It can accommodate between six and 16 astronauts or provide cargo space for stations such as the International Space Station or private commercial platforms. The prototype is currently in production, with a deadline to be completed and shipped to the United States by December 2025.
Akashalabdhi was incubated at IIT-Roorkee in May 2023. The company has previously operated on government grants totaling Rs 3.5 crore and has recently raised Rs 9 crore in its first equity funding round, backed by family offices.
The startup's engagement with SpaceX began through an accelerator program by Amazon Web Services, where its representatives connected with SpaceX’s leadership. The planned launch is part of SpaceX’s scheduled missions, with or without Akashalabdhi’s payload.
Akashalabdhi is exploring partnerships with private space companies, including Agnikul and Skyroot Aerospace, as it seeks to expand its operations in the sector.
