Bengaluru-based company Digantara has commissioned its space surveillance satellite, SCOT (Space Camera for Object Tracking), which began operations on March 8. The satellite, launched aboard SpaceX's Transporter-12 mission on January 14, is designed to track objects as small as 5 centimeters in Earth's orbit.
According to a statement from Digantara, the satellite captured its first image while passing over South America. SCOT is positioned in a sun-synchronous orbit, enabling it to monitor objects in Low Earth Orbit with a high revisit rate. The company stated that this capability provides frequent and precise observations, contributing to collision risk mitigation and space traffic management.
Digantara's satellite aims to support satellite operators and regulatory agencies by offering data for tracking orbital objects. The company noted that SCOT's design overcomes limitations associated with ground-based sensors, such as restricted fields of view and weather-related disruptions.
