The ePlane Company, an electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft developer incubated at IIT Madras, has received Type Certification for its e200X aircraft from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This certification confirms the aircraft meets safety and operational standards required for commercial service.
The company plans to launch eVTOL services by 2026 and aims to facilitate the daily movement of over 500,000 passengers within three years of operations. Over the past 18 months, ePlane has worked on developing operational frameworks, partnerships, and infrastructure in preparation for this milestone.
The e200X is designed with a compact wingspan to minimize infrastructure requirements, which the company states could enable its use in diverse regions in India and other markets. The firm has emphasized utilizing local supply chains to lower production costs.
Satya Chakravarthy, founder of The ePlane Company, described the certification as an important development for the company and its goals of promoting sustainable air mobility.
