GMR Airports Limited (GAL) has initiated the modernization of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur, with plans to enhance its capacity and infrastructure to support regional economic growth and improve connectivity. The project aims to increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity to 30 million annually and its cargo handling capacity to 20,000 metric tons.
The first phase of the development includes expanding the airport's passenger terminal to accommodate 4 million passengers per year and upgrading airside facilities, including a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower. Additionally, a modern cargo terminal will be constructed to enhance logistics operations in the region.
The project is being managed by GMR Nagpur International Airport Ltd. (GNIAL), a subsidiary of GMR Airports Limited, which recently signed a concession agreement with MIHAN India Limited for the project.
G B S Raju, Business Chairman of GMR Group's airport division, highlighted the group's experience in managing major airport projects, both domestically and internationally, and stated that the airport upgrade would improve connectivity and serve as a key economic driver for Central India.
