HAL Receives First F404-IN20 Engine from GE Aerospace for Tejas Mk1A

GE Aerospace has delivered the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A. The delivery marks the first unit from an order placed in 2021.

The F404-IN20 engine was originally selected for the Tejas LCA in 2004, and GE Aerospace supplied 65 units to HAL by 2016. Following the latest order, GE Aerospace restarted the F404-IN20 production line, which had been dormant for five years. The company cited challenges in resuming production, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, but implemented its lean operating model, FLIGHT DECK, to address supply chain constraints and improve manufacturing efficiency.

“We will continue to work together with our suppliers to keep the production line efficient, maintain the highest standards of safety and quality, and deliver to our customer,” said Shawn Warren, General Manager, Combat & Trainer Engines, GE Aerospace.

The F404-IN20 engine features a higher-flow fan, single-crystal turbine blades, and other modifications tailored for the Tejas LCA. GE Aerospace stated that it is working closely with suppliers to ramp up production and ensure timely deliveries to HAL.
