The Indian Air Force is set to significantly strengthen its airborne surveillance capabilities by converting six Airbus A321 aircraft into next-generation Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) platforms. Larger than the existing Embraer-based systems, the upgraded aircraft will offer greater endurance, wider coverage, and enhanced command-and-control capabilities for long-duration missions.
The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed key contracts to execute the AEW&C Mk-II programme. The Airbus A321 aircraft, previously acquired from Air India before its privatisation, will be converted from commercial to military configuration by AI Engineering Services Limited (AIESL), while Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited will serve as the development and production partner for the indigenous surveillance systems.
Led by DRDO's Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS), the programme will integrate advanced airborne surveillance, secure communications, improved situational awareness, and enhanced command-and-control capabilities. The modified aircraft will undergo comprehensive integration, flight testing, and certification in collaboration with the Indian Air Force before induction into service.
The AEW&C Mk-II programme marks a major milestone in India's indigenous defence capability. By leveraging larger Airbus platforms and domestically developed mission systems, the Indian Air Force will gain more capable airborne command centres while strengthening collaboration between DRDO, public sector agencies, and private industry under India's defence modernisation and self-reliance initiatives.Saturday, July 25, 2026
