The Ministry of Defence has signed a $248 million contract with Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport for the procurement of 1,000-horsepower (HP) engines to upgrade the Indian Army’s T-72 tanks. The contract includes engines in fully assembled, completely knocked down, and semi knocked down conditions.
The agreement also involves technology transfer to Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (Heavy Vehicle Factory) in Avadi, Chennai, enabling local integration and licensed production of the engines. This is part of India's ongoing efforts to enhance domestic defense manufacturing capabilities.
The Indian Army currently operates about 2,500 T-72 tanks, which are fitted with 780 HP engines. The introduction of 1,000 HP engines is expected to improve the tanks’ mobility and overall performance.
The T-72 has been in service with the Indian Army since the late 1970s and has undergone multiple upgrades over the years. This latest engine modernization initiative is aimed at ensuring operational effectiveness in evolving combat environments.
