Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced plans to develop a human spaceflight platform, the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), in low Earth orbit (LEO). The station will support medium to long-duration human spaceflight missions and facilitate scientific research and technological development in a microgravity environment.
According to a press release, the BAS will consist of multiple modules and is scheduled for phased deployment. The first module, BAS-01, is targeted for launch in 2028. Full operational capacity with all modules is expected by 2035.
The announcement follows the recent expansion of the Gaganyaan program, which now includes precursor missions to BAS. These preparatory missions are aimed at supporting the development and deployment of the space station's modules.
The information was disclosed in a written response by Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science and Technology, in the Lok Sabha.
