The Philippines is reportedly considering the acquisition of up to nine additional BrahMos coastal missile batteries from India, in a move that could significantly strengthen Manila’s deterrence posture amid rising tensions in the South China Sea.
The potential expansion would build on the $375 million deal signed in January 2022 for three BrahMos batteries. The systems, operated by the Philippine Marine Corps’ Coastal Defense Regiment, include mobile launchers, radars, command elements, training, logistics and maintenance support.
The reported acquisition could transform the emerging “BrahMos Belt” across Southeast Asia. The Philippines was the first foreign customer for BrahMos, while Vietnam and Indonesia have also moved toward acquiring the Indo-Russian supersonic missile system. Thailand has reportedly shown interest as well.
Philippine Ambassador to India Josel F. Ignacio has previously highlighted BrahMos as a credible deterrent, citing its speed and range as important capabilities for strengthening Manila’s anti-access and area-denial posture.
If the reported expansion is approved, additional batteries could provide coverage across strategically important areas including Luzon, Palawan and other exposed approaches, increasing the number of launch positions and improving the Philippines’ ability to conduct distributed coastal defence.
The development would also further reinforce India’s position as a growing defence exporter, with BrahMos emerging as a key component of Southeast Asian maritime deterrence.
However, no Philippine authority has officially confirmed a final nine-battery order, signed contract or approved quantity. The reported expansion remains subject to negotiations, budgetary decisions and formal government authorisation.
If implemented, the acquisition would represent a major expansion of the Philippines’ BrahMos capability and another significant step in the growing regional adoption of land-based anti-ship missile systems.On Date:
