Saab has completed the delivery of its AT4 anti-armour weapon system to the Indian Armed Forces. The variant delivered, AT4CS AST, is designed for use in confined environments such as urban combat zones and enclosed structures. The system is a single-shot, disposable launcher intended for short-range engagements and will be used by both the Indian Army and Indian Air Force.
The procurement follows a contract awarded in 2022. Alongside this delivery, Saab is progressing with preparations to locally manufacture the Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon system at its facility in Jhajjar, Haryana. Production is expected to begin in early 2026, subject to the grant of an industrial licence. The project marks the first defence manufacturing initiative in India under 100% foreign direct investment (FDI).
The Haryana facility will serve both domestic and export markets, producing Carl-Gustaf M4 systems for the Indian Armed Forces and components for global customers. Saab has indicated it will collaborate with Indian suppliers for this project, contributing to domestic manufacturing capabilities in the defence sector.
Saab also plans to expand its footprint in India through potential fighter aircraft manufacturing. The company is in talks with the Indian Air Force regarding the Gripen E multirole fighter and has stated readiness to establish a full-scale production line in India if selected.
Saab is a Sweden-based defence and security company engaged in the development, manufacture, and sale of advanced systems for air, land, and naval applications. In India, Saab continues to expand its industrial base through manufacturing partnerships and technology transfer initiatives.
