Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Airbus have initiated a private-sector aircraft manufacturing partnership in India, focusing on the production of C295 transport aircraft. The program involves the assembly of 56 C295 aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF), with deliveries expected to begin in 2026. The project represents Airbus’s first complete production line outside its home countries.
The partnership aims to replace the IAF's aging Avro fleet with the C295, a transport aircraft designed to operate in varied conditions, supporting military and humanitarian missions. Discussions are underway to expand production beyond the initial order, potentially targeting export markets to sustain operations.
Potential Expansion to Passenger and Export Markets
TASL and Airbus are reportedly exploring the development of a passenger variant of the C295, which could support regional airline operations. The collaboration is also seen as a step toward positioning India as a player in the global aerospace market. The government has encouraged major aerospace manufacturers, including Airbus and Boeing, to consider establishing additional production lines in India, particularly in response to significant orders placed by Indian airlines.
Strategic and Economic Impact
The partnership aligns with efforts to strengthen India’s domestic aerospace manufacturing ecosystem. The C295 program not only advances the country’s defense capabilities but also creates opportunities to participate in the international aerospace supply chain.
According to the companies, the collaboration is expected to generate long-term benefits for the industry, with export opportunities under consideration to ensure sustained production.
