India has reportedly exported its indigenous Akash surface-to-air missile system to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, marking another milestone in the country's growing defence export programme. The development was confirmed by former DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat, highlighting India's expanding strategic footprint in Central Asia.
Designed to intercept aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles, the Akash is a medium-range air defence system known for its cost-effectiveness, multi-target engagement capability, and indigenous design. Its growing international appeal reflects increasing confidence in India's defence manufacturing capabilities.
The exports are strategically significant, as both Central Asian nations have traditionally relied on Russian military equipment. Their adoption of the Akash system signals a diversification of defence procurement while strengthening India's role as a reliable defence partner in the region.
Manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) with DRDO-developed radar and command systems, the Akash missile is emerging as one of India's flagship defence exports alongside BrahMos, Pinaka, and Astra, supporting the country's ambition to become a leading global supplier of indigenous military technology.Friday, July 17, 2026
