India's Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) has entered the trial production phase of its indigenous AI inference chip in partnership with HCL Infosystems, marking a major milestone in India's semiconductor and AI ambitions.
Designed to run trained AI models efficiently across public services, domestic servers, and national digital infrastructure, the chip is currently undergoing validation and performance testing before wider deployment. The initiative is funded under the National Supercomputing Mission, while complementing the government's broader ₹1.27 trillion SEMICON 2.0 programme aimed at strengthening India's semiconductor ecosystem.
The project aims to reduce India's dependence on imported AI processors by developing indigenous semiconductor technology and intellectual property. According to C-DAC, the chip remains on schedule, with a production-ready version targeted for 2029–2030. Once commercialised, it is expected to power AI applications across governance, healthcare, and critical infrastructure, strengthening India's technological self-reliance.Saturday, July 25, 2026
