India’s Defence Manufacturing Sector Enters Export-Driven Growth Phase
India's defence manufacturing sector is witnessing strong export-led growth, with defence exports reaching nearly ₹39,000 crore in 2026, up from just ₹686 crore in 2014. Backed by record domestic production of ₹1.78 lakh crore, government reforms, and increasing private sector participation, India is steadily emerging as a competitive global defence supplier.
Private companies contributed around ₹42,000 crore to total defence production, while policy measures such as simplified export approvals and the Open General Export License (OGEL) have boosted the sector's global competitiveness. Indian manufacturers are increasingly supplying advanced components, composite materials, and specialised defence systems to international markets.
With exports now reaching nearly 100 countries and government targets of ₹3 lakh crore in defence production and ₹50,000 crore in defence exports by 2029, India is strengthening its position as a global defence manufacturing and export hub through continued investment in innovation, indigenous capabilities, and advanced manufacturing.On Date:
