TEJAS Production Surge — HAL Targets 30 TEJAS MK-1As Annually with GE Engine Backing
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to increase annual production of the TEJAS MK-1A fighter aircraft to 30 units, backed by improved engine supplies from GE Aerospace, which has committed to delivering 20–22 F404 engines annually. The move is expected to significantly accelerate deliveries to the Indian Air Force (IAF).
HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi Kota stated that the company has expanded its manufacturing infrastructure with multiple TEJAS production lines, including a new facility at Nashik and additional support from private-sector partners manufacturing complete aircraft structures. HAL has already achieved a production capacity of 24 aircraft per year, with the next phase aimed at reaching 30 annually.
The TEJAS programme had faced delays due to shortages of GE engines, leaving more than 20 aircraft assembled and awaiting powerplants. With GE confirming that supply-chain issues have been resolved, these aircraft are expected to be completed, tested, and delivered to the IAF over the coming months.
The production boost comes at a critical time as the IAF's fighter squadron strength remains at around 31 squadrons, well below the sanctioned 42 squadrons. Faster TEJAS inductions will help strengthen operational readiness while supporting India's long-term defence modernisation goals.
The combination of expanded manufacturing capacity and a more reliable engine supply marks a significant milestone for the TEJAS programme, reinforcing India's drive towards self-reliance in fighter aircraft production while ensuring a stronger and more consistent delivery pipeline for the Indian Air Force.On Date:
