HyderabadIndia's private space sector is set to achieve a major milestone as Hyderabad-based Cosmoserve Space prepares to launch Mission Embrace aboard Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 rocket. The mission will attempt the world's first in-orbit demonstration of soft robotic satellite capture technology, designed to safely attach to defunct and non-cooperative satellites for future debris removal missions.
Unlike conventional rigid capture systems, the indigenous soft robotic mechanism can adapt to irregular and tumbling objects, making it a promising solution for active space debris removal and in-orbit servicing. The technology will serve as the foundation for Cosmoserve's future debris-removal spacecraft aimed at making orbital clean-up significantly more affordable.
The mission also highlights the rapid growth of India's private space ecosystem, with the startup developing the technology from concept to flight-ready hardware in just four months. If successful, Mission Embrace will mark not only India's first private orbital launch aboard Vikram-1 but also establish the world's first demonstration of soft robotic satellite capture in space, reinforcing India's emergence as a global leader in space innovation and orbital sustainability.
