Archer’s Midnight eVTOL Makes Historic First Flight in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi, UAEArcher Aviation has achieved a significant breakthrough in the race to bring advanced air mobility to the Middle East, with its Midnight electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft completing its inaugural test flight at Al Bateen Executive Airport in Abu Dhabi on July 2, 2025. The test flight, conducted in the presence of senior officials from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), the Integrated Transport Centre, Abu Dhabi Aviation, and Abu Dhabi Airports, marks Archer’s first public demonstration in the region. The event also drew representatives from Archer’s regional partners and was supported by the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC). Archer’s flight operations in Abu Dhabi are focused on evaluating the Midnight aircraft’s performance in the UAE’s unique environmental conditions, including high temperatures, humidity, and dust exposure. These tests are a crucial step in validating the aircraft’s readiness for commercial deployment in the region’s challenging climate.
Adam Goldstein, CEO and Founder of Archer Aviation, emphasized the importance of real-world testing:
“Our initial test flight operations in the UAE represent a critical milestone as we prepare for our commercial deployment in Abu Dhabi. Testing our aircraft in actual operating conditions in the middle of summer provides us with the data we need to progress our commercial and certification efforts both in the UAE and in the U.S.”
The successful flight supports Archer’s Launch Edition commercialization program with Abu Dhabi Aviation, which aims to establish air taxi services in the emirate. The initiative is part of Abu Dhabi’s broader vision to become a global leader in advanced urban air mobility, leveraging the Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry (SAVI) Cluster to foster innovation and position the city as a launchpad for transformative technologies.
H.E. Badr Al-Olama, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, commented:
“This flight marks a significant step towards realising Abu Dhabi’s ambition to lead the world in advanced urban air mobility. Through the SAVI Cluster, we are enabling companies like Archer to test, certify and scale next-generation air mobility solutions, reinforcing our position as a global launchpad for innovation and a hub for transformative technologies.”
Following this milestone, Archer plans to expand its flight-testing program for the Midnight aircraft in the region, collecting additional data to support certification and commercialization efforts in the UAE and other key markets. The company’s ongoing partnerships and recent regulatory achievements—including design approval for the UAE’s first hybrid heliport at Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal—underscore its commitment to pioneering sustainable and innovative transport solutions in the Middle East. As Archer continues to advance its certification and commercialization roadmap, Abu Dhabi’s role as the first Launch Edition market cements its status as a frontrunner in the deployment of urban air mobility solutions worldwide.
