Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) marked a key milestone as an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-295 aircraft successfully landed on the airport's recently completed 3,700-meter southern runway. The event, which took place on Friday, also featured a flypast by a Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jet and a ceremonial water cannon salute.
The trial landing comes ahead of the projected start of domestic operations at NMIA, expected by March 2025. The terminal building is reported to be 75% complete, and the airport’s construction is progressing toward the scheduled operational launch. There is potential for an earlier opening, according to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who referenced the rapid pace of work during the event.
The airport is named after DB Patil, a former member of the Lok Sabha and social activist. The airport is expected to relieve congestion at Mumbai’s existing airport and contribute to the region’s economic growth, offering local employment opportunities and attracting businesses.
As construction continues, NMIA is being positioned as a significant infrastructure project with the goal of enhancing air travel capacity in the region.
