The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Airport in Bengaluru is set for a significant overhaul following the approval of a master plan by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The revamp aims to enhance infrastructure and prepare the facility for resuming civilian operations by May 2033 when an exclusivity agreement with Kempegowda International Airport ends.
The master plan outlines a phased redevelopment to accommodate an annual passenger capacity of 40 lakh by 2047, with a peak capacity of 2,500 passengers per hour. HAL Airport, operational since 1941 for defense and private aviation, currently handles 12 small aircraft daily.
Phase-I Development Plans
- Terminal Expansion: The terminal area will increase from 21,885 sq.m to 32,000 sq.m. A new terminal building will replace the existing structure, with arrivals and departures on separate levels.
- Parking Facilities: A multi-level car park with six floors will provide space for 500 vehicles.
- Improved Access Roads: The two-lane road in front of the terminal will be expanded to four lanes.
The existing runway, measuring 3,306 meters in length and 61 meters in width, will remain unchanged.
Future Role
HAL Airport is expected to support the Regional Connectivity Scheme (UDAN) by offering links to nearby cities. The facility will provide additional capacity to meet growing demand as Bengaluru expands.
The total cost of implementing the plan is yet to be finalized. HAL Airport last handled commercial passenger traffic in 2008, managing over 10 lakh flyers in its final fiscal year of operation.
