India and Brazil are reportedly in discussions over a potential exchange deal involving India's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk 1A and Brazil's Embraer C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft. According to information attributed to IDRW, the agreement hinges on India's decision to select the C-390 Millennium.
If finalized, the deal would involve Brazil's acquisition of the Tejas Mk 1A as part of its ongoing effort to modernize the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). The Tejas Mk 1A, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in collaboration with the Aeronautical Development Agency, is a fourth-generation multi-role fighter jet equipped with advanced avionics and indigenous radar systems. It has a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 13.5 tonnes, slightly higher than the FAB's aging Northrop F-5 aircraft, which it may replace.
Brazil has also expressed interest in expanding its fleet of Gripen fighter jets from Sweden. Notably, Sweden has selected the C-390 Millennium as its next military cargo aircraft. The FAB views the Tejas Mk 1A as a potential addition to its inventory, alongside the Gripen, to meet its post-2030 requirements as the F-5 jets are phased out.
FAB Lieutenant-Brigadier Marcelo Kantiz Damasceno recently commented on the FAB's modernization plans, stating that the force is considering options for new fighter aircraft to complement the Gripen and replace the F-5.
The potential exchange deal is seen as a move that could enhance India's defense export capabilities while offering Brazil a cost-effective fighter jet option. Further developments are contingent on formal decisions by both countries.
