India has finalized a $340 million (approximately 29.6 billion rupees) contract for the acquisition of more than 70 Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) systems. The systems, based on the Israeli-designed Barak 8 air defense platform, will be manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).
The MRSAM systems, intended for deployment on the Indian Navy’s upcoming warships, are designed to address a range of aerial threats with an operational range of up to 70 kilometers. Each system includes phased array radar, a command and control unit, mobile launchers, and interceptors equipped with advanced sensors. The platform is already in use across the Indian Navy, Army, and Air Force.
The deal aligns with India’s “Made in India” initiative, which emphasizes local production in defense projects. According to the Ministry of Defence, this agreement is expected to generate approximately 350,000 workdays domestically.
The contract will be implemented by Aerospace Services India (ASI), a subsidiary of IAI based in New Delhi. The transactions will be conducted in Indian currency, further integrating the project into the local economy.
The agreement underscores ongoing defense collaboration between India and Israel, with a focus on local manufacturing and technological integration.
