The Indian Army has signed a contract with civil aviation service providers to ensure helicopter support for its logistics operations during the winter months in remote high-altitude areas along the northern and western borders. According to defense sources, the one-year contract aims to sustain 16 posts in the Jammu region throughout the year, while 28 posts in Kashmir and Ladakh will receive helicopter support for 150 days during the winter season.
The helicopters, which are single-engine models, will operate in sectors such as Drass, Kargil, Batalik, Doda, Kishtwar, and Gurez, primarily between November and April. These aircraft will be used to transport essential supplies, including food, fuel, and medical items, ensuring that remote posts remain operational despite harsh winter conditions.
This initiative marks a shift in how the Army maintains its logistics operations in high-altitude regions by using civil aviation assets instead of relying solely on the military’s helicopter fleet. According to sources, this decision helps preserve the service life of military helicopters for more critical roles, such as combat or emergency scenarios.
While the current contract covers the Northern Command, the Army is considering expanding the model to other regions, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the northeastern states.
The Army's decision to hire helicopters from civil agencies was reported earlier, with indications that the move will support a variety of tasks, including logistics, troop transport, and casualty evacuation along the northern borders.
