Indonesia’s defense ministry has expressed interest in acquiring BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India, with a potential deal valued at $450 million, according to sources. A formal letter regarding the proposal was reportedly sent to the Indian embassy in Jakarta.
The deal may involve financing from Indian national banks, such as the State Bank of India, after initial plans for the Export-Import (EXIM) Bank to provide a loan did not materialize. Discussions on the specifics of the loan are ongoing.
The BrahMos missile, developed jointly by India and Russia, has a range of 290 kilometers and travels at a speed of 2.8 Mach. If finalized, this deal would mark a significant step in India’s defense export efforts following a $375 million agreement with the Philippines in 2022. The Philippines deal included three missile batteries delivered in April 2023.
Indonesia’s potential purchase comes amid broader strategic engagements between India and Indonesia. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to visit India as the chief guest for Republic Day on January 26. The visit could coincide with an announcement regarding the BrahMos deal. However, reports suggest that President Subianto’s additional visit to Pakistan around the same period could influence the finalization of the agreement.
Indonesia’s entry into the BRICS group in January 2024, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, may further facilitate bilateral transactions between India and Indonesia, potentially using local currencies such as the Indian Rupee and the Indonesian Rupiah.
The BrahMos missile system, designed for anti-ship and surface-strike roles, represents a significant technological and strategic asset for buyers, offering advanced capabilities in maritime and territorial defense.
