The Ministry of Defence has finalized a ₹13,500 crore contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the production of 12 Su-30MKI fighter jets. The new aircraft will help address the gap in the Indian Air Force’s fleet caused by the loss of 12 Su-30MKIs in accidents over the last 20 years.
The jets, to be manufactured at HAL's Nashik plant, will feature 62.6% domestically sourced components. HAL plans to upgrade the facility to accommodate the production of the new aircraft, which will include advanced avionics, enhanced electronic warfare systems, and modern weaponry.
In parallel, the Indian Air Force's existing fleet of 240 Su-30MKIs is undergoing upgrades to extend their operational life by 20 years. This includes the integration of 240 new AL-31FP aero engines.
