SITA, a provider of air transport technology, and IDEMIA, a company specializing in biometrics and computer vision, have announced an expansion of their partnership to address challenges in airport baggage handling and operational efficiency.
The collaboration will integrate IDEMIA’s computer vision technology with SITA’s baggage management solutions. According to SITA’s 2024 Baggage IT Insights report, global air travel saw passenger numbers reach 5.2 billion in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Despite the growth, the industry reduced baggage mishandling rates by 9.2% year-on-year, from 7.6 to 6.9 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers.
The partnership aims to further improve baggage tracking, enabling better monitoring of luggage from check-in to the final destination. This integration is expected to reduce delays and mishandling, addressing a growing demand for enhanced passenger visibility and control over their luggage.
Airports are increasingly adopting automation, with 85% introducing self-bag drop systems and 32% of passengers using mobile notifications for baggage updates. The use of computer vision is anticipated to enhance the speed and accuracy of baggage delivery while reducing human error.
Nicole Hogg, Portfolio Director, Baggage at SITA, highlighted the operational challenges posed by increasing passenger traffic. She emphasized the role of technology in addressing bottlenecks in baggage handling.
Gaurav Gupta, Senior Vice President at IDEMIA, outlined the capabilities of the company’s AI-driven baggage image matching solution, ALIX™, which will be integrated into SITA’s existing baggage management systems. According to the press release, SITA’s WorldTracer® solution has already contributed to a 77% reduction in lost baggage.
This partnership marks a step toward improving operational efficiency and enhancing the passenger experience across airports globally.
