The ePlane Company, a Chennai-based electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) startup incubated at IIT Madras, has announced a partnership with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to develop software solutions for electric aviation, according to a report by The Economic Times. The collaboration will focus on battery lifecycle modeling, demand estimation, and operational optimization.
The ePlane Company is working on eVTOL aircraft intended for passenger and cargo transport. The partnership will leverage TCS’s expertise in advanced analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI) to support the development of an ecosystem for air taxis.
ePlane plans to conduct prototype trials in May 2025, with sandbox trials anticipated by late 2026, focusing initially on air ambulance use cases. Commercial operations are expected to commence in 2026, according to Vishnu Ramakrishnan from ePlane's founders' office.
The collaboration will involve TCS applying its capabilities to predict battery life cycles using data from ePlane’s flight tests. The partnership will also develop demand estimation models based on socioeconomic factors, traffic density, and travel times, which will inform the setup of landing points and operational routes.
In the long term, the companies aim to create intellectual property in areas like maintenance, repair, and operational platforms for the emerging eVTOL market. TCS will also explore offering solutions to international customers, leveraging its presence in regions such as Europe and the Middle East.
This initiative aligns with ePlane's plans to address assembly challenges related to battery packs and advance its flight testing program.
