Thales UK and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) have formalized an agreement at Aero India 2025 to deliver Laser Beam-Riding Man-Portable Air Defence Systems (LBRM) and STARStreak High-Velocity Missiles (HVM) to the Indian Army. The contract aims to replace the existing Russian Igla-S systems, with deliveries expected by the end of the year.
As part of the agreement, BDL will join Thales' global supply chain and take part in the production of Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMM). The partnership is designed to support joint manufacturing efforts and strengthen defence capabilities through increased local production.
Simultaneously, the UK Ministry of Defence has introduced a dedicated programme office to enhance bilateral defence cooperation. The initiative includes the launch of the UK-India Defence Partnership Pavilion, aimed at fostering industry collaboration.
Further developments include a UK-Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) partnership to develop an Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP) system for India’s future Landing Platform Dock (LPD). Additionally, an assembly and testing facility for Advanced Short-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (ASRAAM) is being established in Hyderabad.
These agreements align with India’s strategy to enhance domestic defence production and strengthen international defence partnerships. The announcement was made in a press release issued by Thales.
