On Monday, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu announced that the government’s flagship regional air connectivity program, Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAAN), will be extended for an additional ten years.
Minister Naidu highlighted the scheme's achievements, noting that over 1.4 crore passengers have benefitted from UDAAN, with 2.8 lakh flights operated under the program. The scheme has facilitated the operation of 583 routes and 157 airports are now functional across the country. "UDAN has democratized air travel in India," he remarked.
The government’s objective, according to Naidu, is to enhance regional connectivity, simplify business operations, and create a unified aviation sector that promotes balanced regional development. "Our vision is to make it possible for flights to take off from the most remote corners and land in the least developed areas," he said, adding that the Ministry aims to connect every region in India through air travel.
He also revealed ambitious plans to develop 350-400 airports over the next 20-25 years. The UDAN scheme, extended for another decade, will be improved through public feedback, with a focus on making air travel more affordable.
Naidu shared that Indian airlines have placed orders for 1,200 aircraft, indicating a growing demand in the country. He emphasized the need to streamline aircraft leasing in India, which would attract more foreign direct investment (FDI). "Improving aircraft leasing regulations will open up new avenues for investment in India," he noted.
Naidu further outlined the government's broader vision of improving air connectivity within the Asia-Pacific region through a hub-and-spoke model, with major metropolitan cities serving as hubs and smaller towns as spokes.
The minister also expressed his desire for India to become a global aviation hub, given its strategic geographic location. He stated that efforts were underway to enhance infrastructure and encourage airlines to help realize this goal.
On the subject of sustainable aviation, Naidu emphasized India’s commitment to eco-friendly practices. He pointed out that both Delhi and Mumbai airports have achieved carbon neutrality, and solar mega power plants are being installed at airports. He also revealed targets for blending sustainable aviation fuel, aiming for 1% by 2027, 2% by 2028, and 5% by 2030.
