India's indigenous SARAS MK-2 commuter aircraft is on track for its maiden flight in Q4 FY2027-28, marking a key milestone in the country's civil aviation programme. Developed by CSIR-NAL, the 19-seat twin-turboprop aircraft is expected to receive certification by mid-2031.
The Indian Air Force has emerged as the launch customer with a Letter of Intent for 15 aircraft, while additional interest from the IAF, state governments, and the civil sector could take the potential order book to over 100 aircraft.
The aircraft currently features around 50% indigenous content, including its airframe, avionics, flight control systems, and major assemblies, with plans to increase localisation further. HAL will serve as the production partner, supported by Indian industry leaders such as L&T, Tata Advanced Systems, Motherson Aerospace, and several MSMEs.
Positioned as an indigenous replacement in the regional commuter aircraft segment, the SARAS MK-2 is expected to strengthen India's aerospace manufacturing ecosystem while supporting regional connectivity and reducing reliance on imported platforms.Friday, July 17, 2026
